Get your Google data out — and actually use it.
Takeout Photo turns your Google Photos Takeout into a private timeline of your life — trips detected, places named, the best shots picked — and can put your photos on your Strava activities or move them to Proton Photos with albums and dates intact. All on your own computer.
In development — coming soonHow it works
1 Export with Google Takeout
Export your Google Photos with Google Takeout to your computer or Google Drive. This gives you a complete archive of your photos and metadata.
2 Point Takeout Photo at the archives
Point Takeout Photo at the archives — a folder on disk, a Drive link, or sign in with Google and pick the archive files. The app reads them directly.
3 Browse your timeline
Browse your timeline: home periods, day trips and holidays, each with a map and an AI-curated preview. Everything stays on your computer.
What you can do with your Google Photos Takeout
Three things Takeout Photo does with the export you already have — everything stays on your own computer.
Browse it as a timeline
Read the .zip/.tgz archives in place and browse your photos as trips and places on a map, with the real dates and GPS from the JSON sidecars.
See photos on your Strava activities
Match your Google Photos to each Strava activity by capture time and see every photo placed along the GPS track.
Move it to Proton Photos
Import the Google Photos part of your Takeout into Proton Photos in original quality, keeping albums and writing dates and locations into the files.
Features
Automatic trips
Detects where you live, when you moved, and every trip away — so you can browse your life by journey, not just by date.
Places named
Towns and countries are identified from your photos' GPS coordinates. No manual tagging needed.
AI curation
Groups near-duplicates and picks the best photos, on your own machine. Your memories, curated without the cloud.
Maps and routes
See the path you took on each trip. Routes are drawn on an interactive map using open street data.
Works with huge libraries
Reads the archives in place and handles hundreds of GB — no need to unpack them first.
New exports merge in
Scheduled Takeout exports are picked up and merged automatically, without duplicating photos you already have.
Private by design
Everything is processed locally on your computer; your photos are never uploaded to our servers. Google access is read-only and limited to the files you pick.
Frequently asked questions
Is it a web app?
No — it runs on your own computer. A desktop app for macOS and Windows is planned. Your photos never leave your machine.
Does it need my Google password?
No — sign-in happens on Google's own page, and you can revoke access any time at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
What about the Google Photos API?
Google no longer lets apps read a whole Photos library, so Google Takeout is the way to get all your photos with their metadata. Takeout exports include everything you need.
Why are the dates wrong after unzipping a Google Takeout?
The file's own timestamp is often the export date; the real capture date and GPS live in the .json sidecar next to each photo. Takeout Photo reads those sidecars, so dates and places are right. See browsing a Takeout as a timeline.
Can I see my Google Photos on my Strava activities?
Yes — the Strava app matches your Google Photos from the Takeout to each activity by capture time and places every photo along the GPS track ("km 12.3 · 10:42"). See photos on your Strava activities.
How do I move my Google Photos to Proton Photos?
The sync app moves the Google Photos part of your Takeout into Proton Photos in full original quality, keeping albums (or making trip albums) and writing dates, GPS and descriptions from the JSON sidecars into the files first. See moving Google Photos to Proton Photos.
Can I add someone else's Takeout, like my partner's?
Yes — other people's Takeouts can be added, so their photos attach to the trips you shared.
